Buying Elections

Here we go again. The US Primaries are coming up and everyone is asking for donations to their campaigns.

See my old post: Buying the Government

Heads up, my fellow Progressives: I am not going to give any of you any money, ever again.

I will work for my favorite candidates, I will twist arms and beg to get others to show up and vote, I will fight any attempts to keep them from it, and I will myself vote without fail; but I refuse to believe that the election will be decided by who has the most cash to invest in cheap-shot TV ads. If the American electorate is stupid enough to be swayed by slick lies, then we’ll get the government we richly deserve.

Go out and talk to people. Especially the people on “the other side” — see The Platinum Rule — and people who declare their disinterest in voting. Lots of folks can’t bring themselves to vote for someone they dislike, just to prevent the election of someone they hate worse. There may soon be an alternative — see https://www.negative.vote/ — but until then it’s important to put that clothespin on your nose and choose the lesser of two evils, because we’ve seen just how evil the greater one can get!
